About this event
The West Point Camporee is an annual invitational camping event sponsored by the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Created to bring the fun had by troops at the National Scout Jamboree to an annual event in NY. It attracts Scout units, from over a dozen states, from across the United States; from over 75 different Scout councils. It's one of the largest annual Scouting events held in the country. The event consists of a weekend campout on the Academy property with static and active displays, competitions, demonstrations, and a trading post.
This past April over 4000 scouts and parents gathered at Lake Frederick with camping supplies ready to enjoy the 59th annual West Point Scout Camporee. Throughout the day, many scouts donned their face paint, getting into the spirit of camp festivities, playing football, frisbee and learning how to cast fishing poles from expert fishermen. Moreover, with about 200 cadet volunteers, the event had a variety of extracurricular activities like cadet/scout physical training, a helicopter display and fly-in exhibition, and demonstrations from the U.S. Corps of Cadet Clubs, among other activities.
Some events planned for 2024 include:
Air Rifle: Scouts will be able to shoot an air powered rifle at targets downrange. Cadets will prep and load the rifle then give the scouts the ammunition and rifles and letting them fire at targets for a score.
Camouflage: Scouts will apply camouflage patterns to promote attention to detail and raise morale through the engagement and competition of applying face paint.
Drill: Scouts will learn the skills necessary to perform the drill ceremony.
Fire: Scouts will have to build a fire to burn a string at a given height. The Scouts will be graded on how fast they are able to burn through the string and how many matches they use.
First Aid: Scouts will learn how to conduct first aid in a combat scenario. The scouts will be tasked with extracting a casualty from the objective, providing tactical care, and setting up for a MEDEVAC.
Knots: Scouts will be taught 5 different knots and their military uses and everyday applications. It will culminate in a tug-o-war against other troops that utilizes the knots taught.
LRC: Scouts' problem-solving and physical ability will be assessed as they navigate through several exciting obstacles and challenges in an exciting, timed environment.
Swiss Seat: Scouts will learn to tie a Swiss Seat and then be tested on their ability to recreate a quality knot. Once inspected, scouts will have the opportunity to cross a rope bridge with their harness.
Wilderness Survival: Scouts will learn to build survival shelters using ponchos and paracord, and water filters using plastic bottles and various materials.
Zodiac: Scouts will use teamwork and physical skills to successfully navigate a zodiac boat from the Lake Frederick beach around a buoy (approx. 50 yards) and landing back to the beach. Troops will be graded on their time from launching to landing the zodiac.
